Dear Cafe del Sol Patrons:

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Well, this is the final post. Alas, the word is that Cafe del Sol as we have known it is no longer to be. What will happen in the SW corner of 302 South Locust Street is unknown to me.

All I can say is that creating and operating Cafe del Sol has been an enriching and transforming experience for me and Frank. We have been blessed with our service to our devoted customers, and have had an amazing staff doing the diligence. We feel gratified that our customers—both near and far– have expressed their appreciation at what we have contributed to the community.

When we began this endeavor, we wanted to become a more active part of our community. We wanted to contribute to the economic and cultural growth that is so promising in Floyd. I feel that we have done just that. For a myriad of reasons, we had to come to conclusion with the Cafe—however the ending was not ours to write.

We hope that the cultural, musical and artistic energy that has put Floyd on the map will continue to be the positive community support that was our vision.

Namaste. Peace, Best Regards-
Sally & Frank Walker

Dear Cafe Patrons, Coffee Aficionados, Caffeine addicts, friends and curious onlookers:

Monday, March 1st, 2010

It is with much sadness that I announce that I will not be reopening Cafe del Sol on Monday, March 1.

It was our sincerest hope that the Cafe would reopen under new ownership at this time. There have been, however, “blips in the road”. We are still hopeful that the Cafe will reopen, providing the community with everything we have become known for.

It has been entertaining hearing all the stories that have been circulating concerning the Cafe’s situation and future…especially the part about me selling out to Starbucks! We have become an essential part of the Floyd community, however, and therefore must expect that folks will speculate as to where will they get their next latte.

Alas, fair Floyd friends, I cannot predict the future. I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting and serving everyone—you have enriched my life. As for the Cafe’s future—Stay Tuned!

My Best—Sally
(Former)” Countess of Coffee”

Happy New Year!

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

We hope everyone has had a happy holiday season! The weather has presented all of us with some challenges—as well as some beautiful winterscapes. We are sorry for any inconveniences this might have presented our patrons, and hope things will go more smoothly going into the new year—but there is no accounting for “Mother Nature”! We appreciate that the town is being active removing the snow—therefore providing more parking and walking space along the main thoroughfares in town.

Winter News:
Winter is an interesting time in the business world in Floyd—Will Mother Nature deal us a good hand? Will folks stay at home—or will they get cabin fever? How much do people love their lattes and turkey paninis? Can they live without Anita’s double chocolate brownies?

During the Month of January we will be open:
Monday-Thursday 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM
Friday 8:00 AM-9:00 PM
Weather permitting, we will have food and music on Friday nights
Saturday 9:00-4:30

We will be closed a week in February for our annual cleaning and refurbishing!
Stay tuned! Otherwise-it’s full steam—latte style- ahead!

Moving Forward:
We here in Floyd have survived many a difficult winter—this is one of the worst most of us can recall—but it will pass. And we are, of course, looking ahead..of necessity and sanity—but knowing that we have a great spring going forward.

–IN THE MEANTIME–

THE SUN MUSIC HALL is presenting a concert on JAN 29 and R. T BONES—ahem–REPUBLIC OF FLOYD- PRESENTS.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING EVERYONE, SHARING WINTER WAR STORIES AND SHARING WARM BEVERAGES

Believe it or not - A New Website Update !!

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

OK, I ADMIT IT.

I am the word’s worst at keeping up with my web site. I am not making excuses, but in addition to keeping up with the crazy pace at the Cafe, “Dolly Mama” ( that would be me) is building a new housse—not with my own hands of course—but still…

I swear I will never build a house and run a business at the same time ever again! Despite that, this spring and summer have been great. We have a wonderful new deck for our patrons to partake of their food and beverage, while having the best spot in town to enjoy the music and street scene. Our deck overlooks the new Mayberry Park, and the benches and sidewalks where the street pickers play. It’s the best seat in town!

We are a mere few feet from the Country Store, so meander on down when your feet get tired of dancing. We have music in the Cafe on Friday nights, and we feature local and regional talents highlighting a variety of styles and genre. While we certainly honor our local music heritage, Floyd County is also know for its wealth of musical talent that spans the musical spectrum. Come and check it out!

While we’re talking music—The Sun Music Hall is located directly behind Cafe del Sol. The Sun Music Hall has presented such big names as Richie Havens, New Riders of the Purple Sage, and regional favorites The Hackensaw Boys and The Avett Brothers. Be sure and check out their website for good things to come.

FOOD!FOOD!FOOD!

The Cafe offers a full menu on Friday Nights until 8:30—Check out the menu page on our website. We also offer wine, beer, and our full espresso bar until 10:30.

OK—SORRY ABOUT THE PIZZA THING. But, well—it got too dang hot—and then DOGTOWN PIZZA came in with that great mobile pizza oven—They took over the scene—and I am glad!! Check them out—the have got awesome pizza! But come January, hmmmm, maybe our ovens will be cooking again!

Dolly Mamma speaking here—aka Little Diva—aka Sally Walker—aka owner Cafe del Sol. Whew! Hard to keep up with myself!

One of the hats I wear is as a musician—I pull a gig here and there, and sit in with the musicians that play the Cafe on Friday nights. I am working on a new CD—all songs about coffee.

OFT—Ever wonder what that means when you are buying coffee? How about “Swiss Water Process Decaf”?

As with many commodities in our increasingly global economy, consumers have developed a growing consciousness about the sources of the products they consume. This is very true with coffee and tea, as consumers become more concerned and sophisticated in their choices.

In the not-so-distant past, coffee the production of coffee—and some teas–was exploitative, both of human cost and of the environment.

The overwhelming movement in both the coffee and tea industry is toward organic growing practices, fair trade with the growers, and shade grown product to preserve the environment and encourage natural wildlife.

SO—that OFT stands for “Organic Fair Trade”, Shade grown means just that.

Are you a decaf drinker? The decaf process previously involved some nasty chemical—but the Swiss Water Process uses no chemicals.

So now when you buy your “bag-o-beans”, you will know exactly what you are getting. Café del Sol is proud to carry OFT and Swiss Water Process beans. Enjoy!! With a clear conscience.
